Season Of Sadness

We are entering into the holiday season and for many it is a flurry of activity. Our minds and lives are filled with visions of parties and presents. Joy and excitement are at their peak. But for some this season brings on feelings of loneliness, sadness, and depression.

For these people just making it through is an accomplishment. Whether you realize it or not suicide rates are higher now than at any other time of year.

So how do you respond when you see someone hurting and in need of help and comfort? Take a cue from Job.

If you have ever read the story of Job you know that he experienced oppressive depression. His friends gathered around him. They understood well that the initial comfort Job needed was simply their presence. No words; none at all.

When grief and pain are at their peak your presence alone can be a comfort. Having lost my husband suddenly I can confirm that a hug is more comforting than any words, at least initially.

The next stage is when the questions begin. Why did this happen? How can I cope? What reason is there to continue to hope? During this phase give only kind words not condemnation as Job's friends offered.

I'll never forget when Earnie died I thought, I am strong, I will be fine. But when I found myself alone the next morning I called my mommy and she hopped the next plane. So you see your presence is the most important thing to give.

So remain sensitive and genuine. Most importantly be there fully. Listen and love. If you feel the need to speak do so with compassion.
